Crufts 2009

On the Discover Dogs stand

On the Sunday of Crufts all the really smart dogs were in the show ring. So my owner, Viv, volunteered us to man the Cardigan Corgi stand at Discover Dogs. We were on all morning with my new friend, Blue. Blue is only 6 months old and hadn’t done his first show. So I tried to show him the ropes. I hope if I have puppies they will be as cute as Blue

My friend Blue

We were on a stand between the Swedish Valhunds and the Pembroke Corgis. Both of those breeds are rather noisy and I told Blue we must be as quiet as church mice. We didn’t make a woof between us. I stood on a table for about 2 hours while my owner answered questions from people thinking about owning a Cardigan corgi.

The Pembroke stand

I decided my job was to look smarter and cuter than the Pembrokes next door. As far as I can see they are beige, yappy things with inferior ears and an apology for a tail. But they had a bigger stand than ours and featured a dog who had taken part in that film, The Queen. Presumably the real Queen doesn’t know of our breed.

I showed off my tail and ears and smiled a lot. Several people wanted to take photos of Blue and me. We stood very still. Children wanted to stroke us and I responded by kissing them.

Congratulations to Sarah Taylor and her winning Cardi, CH Bymil Picture This – aka Ina.

Sister Emily and me

My sister, Emily, real name Yardican Kwick Step, was competing and came third in her class. I thought that was really good. Next year I’ll be competing too. I’ll never beat Emily in the show ring but I bet I can run faster, catch a ball better and tear up more paper hankies in a minute than she ever will. She’s the model and I’m the athlete. Mum, Yardican Diamond Drop, couldn’t compete because she had ladies’ problems!

I'm so proud

I heard my owner say she had only discovered Cardigan corgis when she visited our Discover Dogs stand at Crufts in 2008. She told them it was the best decision of her whole life when she bought me and I felt very, very proud and licked her nose to say “Thank you”.

It was good that we had several Welsh visitors but only one of our Welsh visitors had corgis and she had both Pembrokes and Cardigans. (I told Blue I thought the Pembroke must have been a mistake!)

Protestors

When we left Crufts there were protestors outside telling people to have rescue dogs instead of pedigree dogs. How sad. But the protestors and police weren’t frightening.

And then my owner lost her car in car park E5. There were lots of people looking for their cars. My owner held one lady’s parcels and her dog, Samba, while she went searching for her car. Samba and I chuckled. We could have sniffed out our own cars easy as wink. My owner has a VS number plate – her initials – to make really sure she doesn’t lose it.

The overall winner of Crufts was a Sealyham terrier, called Charmin, another endangered Welsh breed.
